TIBETAN HISTORY
Tibetans began immigration to North America in the 1950's. The elder brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the late Taktser Rinpoche, was one of the earliest new immigrants to the U.S. Other Buddhist teachers followed. In the 1990's, the United States Congress passed a resolution authorizing 1,000 immigration visas to Tibetans living in the Indian subcontinent. Immigration grew immediately. Currently there are about 12,500 Tibetans living in North America. During this relatively short period of time, Tibetans have done outstandingly well in preserving their unique, respected culture on an individual basis. Yet at the same time, they have worked tirelessly in bringing family members to join them in their various locations throughout their adopted homeland. A paramount goal has been the education of Tibetan children, with many undertaking college and post collegiate paths. Tibetans contribute in multiple ways to the local and national communities in their North American homes yet generously continue to help their global communities. These values are followed as treasured advice from His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
