Scott McKenzie

- January 10, 1939 – August 18, 2012

Singer Song Writer Scott McKenzie, best known forhis amazing clear voice on his 1967 “Summer of Love” anthem, “San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair),” died in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the age of 73.

For a few years, Scott had suffered from the extremely rare Guillain – Barre Virus.

“San Francisco” — which peaked at Number Four in the charts— was written and produced by Scott's best friend John Phillips (of the Mamas And The Papas). MacKenzie and Phillips were bandmates in the early-’60s groups the Abstracts — who went on to become the Smoothies, before the pair formed the Journeymen, who recorded three albums for Capitol Records before breaking up in 1964.

Scott co-wrote with John Phillips, Terry Melcher, and Mike Love, the Beach Boys’ comeback hit, the 1988 chart-topper, “Kokomo.”

In 1986 Scott joined, at John's request, a latter-day version of the Mamas And The Papas, which also included Denny Doherty, and at times Spanky McFarlane, musical Director Johnny Kito, and others who will be added here soon..

Traveling on the road with them was a memorable, fun, crazy and just great adventure, and a great time was had by everyone.

Scotty ... will be sorely missed. He has left so very many friends and fans a far richer world because of him.

    The Final Ride
© Scott McKenzie - Los Angeles, Ca. August17, 2012

But, OH! How I wish I was a true cowboy,
with a great Appaloosa waiting to gallop away,
me sitting on his back, deep into my desert,
far beyond my precious Joshua Tree,
where dreams are made, beautiful dreams,
but this time I need to travel deep into the unknown.
And will I ever come back?
Right now I say no, never.
Oh well, a dream's a dream's a dream's a dream.

Oh, but my mighty Appalooosa's eyes keep firing up,
and his nostrils keep flaring as he transcends the stink and pettiness beneath him,
half riding, half flying toward place still unscarred by any unnatural activity.

ONWARD AND UPWARD! FULL SPEED AHEAD,
MY BEAUTIFUL, MAJESTIC APPALOOSA!
CARRY US ALL TO THE REGIONS WHERE WE CAN DREAM,
WITH NO FEAR AT ALL,
UNINTERRUPTED AND FOREVER FREE FROM FEAR.
