HISTORIC EVENT IS FREE TO THE PUBLIC TO ATTEND Superstar Whoopi Goldberg will emcee His Holiness the Dalai Lama's "A Talk for World Peace" at the U.S. Capitol (West Lawn) in Washington, DC on Saturday, July 9th at 9:30 a.m. This historic event is free to the public and all faiths and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to attend. Also participating in the event is recording artist Skylar Grey, who will perform a never before heard song as a tribute to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people. The event is hosted by the Capital Area Tibetan Association (CATA) and will be largest event led by His Holiness the Dalai Lama after relinquishing his political roles to the elected bodies of the Central Tibetan Administration since March 2011. Whoopi Goldberg is one of an elite group of artists who have won the Academy, Grammy, Golden Globe, Emmy and Tony awards. In addition to her many accomplishments as a performer, author and producer, she is equally well-known for her charitable and humanitarian efforts around the world. Skylar Grey is a GRAMMY nominated singer/songwriter who is responsible for co-writing some of the most memorable songs to light up the Billboard Hot 100 and iTunes sales chart over the past year including "Love The Way You Lie," "I Need A Doctor" and "Coming Home," the global hit that's chorus will be included in a new, full length song that Grey will perform on July 9th. Grey's debut solo album Invinsible will be released in Fall 2011. Also performing on July 9th will be cellist Michael Fitzpatrick, who has worked closely with His Holiness the Dalai Lama over the past 14 years on Compassion Rising project. Few lives in history have spoken as deeply to the goodness of the human spirit as the life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. A bright light dispelling the darkness of our times, His Holiness has spread his message of peace, non-violence, tolerance, compassion and wisdom around the world in over 62 countries and across six continents. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, His Holiness has received over 84 humanitarian commendations, including the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007, and has authored more than 72 books. He has overcome unimaginable hardships while protecting the people of Tibet after the brutal occupation of their homeland in the 1950s. His Holiness has also established a government in exile, promoting a democratic system of rule. His simple demeanor and joyful humor have endeared him to millions of people around the world. He has given the Kalachakra teachings to over 1.5 million people around the world. This will be the 31st time he has given the Kalachakra empowerments since initiating the Kalachakra gatherings in 1954. It is of particular significance that it is being held in the nation's capital, seen as the leading hub of the free world where local decisions deeply and globally affect an incalculable numbers of lives. The Kalachakra is a rare opportunity to promote the universal values of peace and tolerance, so urgently needed in today's world. The 11-day event launches on July 6, the 76th Birthday of the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama, along with monks and senior lamas, will conduct rituals which prepare and consecrate the venue during the first seven days. These include the chanting of prayers and the creation of the sand mandala. The making of the exquisite, colorful Kalachakra sand mandala by the monks of Namgyal Monastery, the Dalai Lama's personal monastery, is one of the most inspiring visual experiences of the Kalachakra.
