A bit more news about KEMPE

As of December 18, Gabreal Franklin spoke with Philip Collins of the
the Kempe Society, and these 2 panels will be registered
with them.
Then on Jan 25, 2003, Mr.Collins wrote, saying he believes
The one holding the book is by Herbert Bryans (note the Running Dog logo on the book)

It has proven to always be interesting digging into the past of these kinds of art objects.
For example, the panel, at the left, is indeed Kempe. A least it has a Kempe Wreath signature.
Not that we disagree with Mr. Phillips either.
It is facinating to unravel.
Thanks to Mr. Collins, more news on this to follow.

In February 2007, Philip Collins kindly sent word that what we believed to be a Kempe "wreath" is in fact a tassel. The window is not by Kempe
Leading to another question - whose signature is a Tassel? A student of Kempe? A competitor?

A litle research, now with additional info, we found reference to stained glass windows manufactured by Herbert Bryans of London which may be identified by the "Running Dog" Signature. Bryans was formerly with the famous stained glass workshop of C.E.Kempe and
examples of his work may also be seen at St Agnes, Ullet Road, Liverpool.

In fact, it is likely that original addresses/buildings/orders will be found through them.
The Franklin Collection has purchased the "Corpus of Kempe Stained Glass in the UK and Ireland"
published in December 2000 by the Kempe Trust, a registered charity set up by the
Kempe Societyís members to promote the conservation of Kempe glass.
The book, which is illustrated and offers a county-by-county guide, has 395 pages.
It costs £17.50 (+ £2.50 p&p) from the
Kempe Society, 41 York Avenue, Crosby, Liverpool L23 5RN.

This part of the collection - that we have been discussing,
is mostly un researched.

All this info is known for the William Morris/Burne Jones pieces, for example.

In the last 20 years, apparently there has been a large movement
to rebuild this information about Kempe. All new information to me.
I just always admired his work, regardless of his 'popularity'.

One response to a church in England that recently had a
Kempe window appraised for insurance purposes was:
Priceless.
.

showing Kempe's trademark of a wreath of wheat now identified as a
TASSEL by Philip Collins of the Kempe Society,
not a Kempe signature.

Extractions: Charles E Kempe (1837-1907) was a painter of walls, ceilings and woodwork of
churches in the 1860's. The style then in vogue reflected a resurgance of interest to high church
practices. Kempe's training served him well, and he started his own stained glass company,
CE Kempe and Co in London, in 1868. Kempe was not a trained artist, but was nevertheless artistic,
and able to suggest ideas which could be developed by his artists and cartoonists.
He insisted that only the firm's name should take the credit for the standard of work produced,
              and that
individual members of the studio remain anonymous.
Kempe perfected the use of silver stain on clear glass, which leaves a yellow tint,
which could be delicate or deep depending on the
amount of stain. His greatest stylistic influence was the stained glass of
Northern Germany and Flanders from the 16th Century.
He took many trips to Europe, often taking the Kempe Company
              artists with him. ",

Extractions: There is a renewed interest in the stained glass windows in churches where they were once taken for granted. Not long ago, when the windows of a church began to look old
fashioned or needed extensive repairs, they were replaced.
This was easier for the stained glass studio and was probably cheaper than repairs that no one then knew much about anyway.
New styles of church architecture called for new styles of decoration.
Now, society as a whole has become more aware of historic buildings. The windows are an important part of the fabric of a building. Sometimes, the owners must spend a good deal of money to clean and restore them. Whether it's the money spent or the vibrant color that emerges from the restoration, the stained
glass becomes a focus point of the building. This leaves everyone asking: Who made these windows? The first place to look for a signature is the lower right. Then go over the whole window
before you give up. A window in Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, Baltimore, has a signature on the hem of Jesus' robe.
A window in Mercersburg Academy Chapel by the Camm Studio has not only the studio but everyone who worked on the window and several members of the family. The signature of the Tiffany Studio is usually acid etched from flashed glass and visible along the
bottom border, probably because very little of the window was painted. Of course, it should be remembered that not every opalescent window is a Tiffany! Though that seems obvious, not
everyone is aware of it.",

Extractions: It was originally a chapel of ease for Kirkby Mallory Parish Church which has given Earl Shilton a connection with the Byron family .
Lady Byron was the estranged wife of the famous poet, the sixth Lord Byron .
It was Lady Byron who appointed the Revd. Ferdinand Tower as first Vicar of the living in 1854. He painted the walls of the church with murals of which some remain today and also painted the chancel ceiling , which is worth seeing as fine Victorian art. He rebuiltA famous personality who visited the church to preach was the Revd G.A .Studdert Kennedy better known by his nickname, "Woodbine Willy" an army padre in the First World War so named for he gave Woodbine cigarettes to dying soldiers whilst offering spiritual help to them.
He has written several books and poems. Walter Ernest Tower was born at Earl Shilton in 1873, the sixth and youngest son of the Revd. Ferdinand Ernest Tower, the first vicar of St. Simon and St. Jude Parish Church, Earl Shilton. The "little turrets", as the Tower children were called by some of their relatives, were Henry (who became a Revd. Canon), Fred, William, Ernest, David, Walter, Agatha, and May. With such a large family, the Vicar's stipend was stretched very thinly, but apparently the family was a happy one. After leaving school Walter trained with the architect, Anton Webb. He did not qualify as an architect but he set up his own architectural business from his home in Queensgate about 1896. At this time, relatives of Walter approached Charles Eamer Kempe, of Kempe's Glass Works, a distant relation, and asked him to put some architectural work in Walter's way. ",
